Long-haul flight kit

Eight hours or more in one seat. The goal is not comfort, it is landing able to think. Six items do most of the work; the rest is ritual.

Ticks are saved in this browser only.

A long-haul kit is small by design: everything on this list fits in a pouch that goes under the seat, so the overhead bag never needs to come down. The order is the order of the flight: boarding, sleep, landing.

We have left out things that look essential in flat-lays and get used once: full-size neck pillows, hydrating face masks, foot hammocks.

Sleep and sound

Audio · Sony or Apple

Noise-cancelling earbuds or headphones

For you if you want to sleep through engine noise and a crying baby three rows back.

Trade-off earbuds hurt after six hours for some ears; over-ear headphones are more comfortable but take a packing cube of space.

Sleep · Manta or similar

Contoured sleep mask

For you if you can only sleep in the dark and the cabin lights stay on.

Trade-off the moulded ones are bulkier than a flat mask; the flat ones press on your eyes. Pick by how you sleep, not by reviews.

Sleep · Trtl or Cabeau

Inflatable or compact neck pillow

For you if you sleep sitting up and wake with a stiff neck.

Trade-off the scarf-style supports work only if you sleep upright; the inflatable ones are light but go flat by hour five.

Cabin air is dry and you will not move for hours. Two items cover it.

Health · Any pharmacy brand

Compression socks

For you if the flight is over six hours, especially if you have had swollen ankles before.

Trade-off they are tight to put on in a seat; put them on at the gate, not at 35,000 feet.

Health · Hydro Flask or any

Refillable bottle, empty through security

For you if you want more than the two small cups the crew brings.

Trade-off a steel bottle weighs 300 g empty; a collapsible silicone one weighs nothing and looks like it.

Power · Anker

10,000 mAh power bank

For you if the seat has no USB port, which is still most seats in economy on older aircraft.

Trade-off it must be in the cabin, never checked; some airlines now limit use in flight, so charge the phone before boarding too.

Entertainment · Amazon

Kindle or downloaded content

For you if the seat-back screen is broken or the film selection is three months old.

Trade-off another device to charge; a phone with downloads does the same if the battery holds.

Connection · Airalo

eSIM activated before take-off

For you if you want maps and a taxi app working the moment the wheels touch.

Trade-off install at home on wifi; installing at the arrivals hall on airport wifi is the slow version. Local SIMs are cheaper if you stay a month: see the connectivity guide.

Habit · Paper

One-page arrival note

For you if you arrive tired at night.

Trade-off hotel address, transfer plan and a photo of your passport, on paper. Phones die; paper does not.

What to leave at home

lighter already

skip:A full-size pillow

It takes the whole personal item. The contoured mask plus a jumper does more.

skip:A big toiletry bag

Toothbrush, lip balm, one small moisturiser. Everything else is at the hotel.

skip:Slip-on slippers

Fine for business class; in economy they end up on the floor you do not want to touch.
