Fast boats from Bali to Nusa Penida and the Gilis

Boats leave from the beach, you get your feet wet, and the sea decides the timetable. Book the operator, not the cheapest seat, and take the morning boat.

Nusa Penida and Lembongan are a short fast-boat ride from Sanur. The Gili Islands are a longer crossing, from Padang Bai or other ports on the east coast. Most boats board from the beach, so you wade to the boat.

Seas are usually calmer in the morning. If you are prone to seasickness, take the first boat and sit at the back, where the motion is smaller.

What to leave at home

lighter already

skip:The cheapest operator, unread

Read recent reviews for life jackets, overloading and whether boats run on time. Pay a little more for that.

skip:A same-day flight after a boat

Crossings are cancelled or delayed in rough seas. Leave a night between.

skip:A wheeled suitcase

You carry it across sand and into the water. Backpack or soft bag.
