Where to stay in Bali

Bali is bigger and slower to cross than it looks on a map. Pick the area for what you want to do most, then the kind of stay. Most first trips split the week between two.

The mistake most first visitors make is booking one hotel for the whole trip and spending two hours a day in traffic. The island works better in bases: a few nights inland in Ubud, the rest by the sea.

This guide is written from the island. It does not rank hotels, because we have not stayed in them all and will not pretend to. It tells you which area fits which trip, and what to check before you book anything there.

Four bases cover almost every trip. The trade-off line is the one the brochures leave out.

Ubud, for rice fields and temples

For you if you want green views, yoga, temples, day trips and slightly cooler evenings, and can live without a beach.

Trade-off it is inland, an hour or more from a good beach, and the centre jams up every afternoon.

Canggu, for surf and cafes

For you if you want surf lessons, coworking, brunch and people your age.

Uluwatu, for cliffs and sunsets

For you if you want white-sand coves, clifftop sunsets and quieter nights.

Sanur, for calm water and families

For you if you travel with children or want calm water behind the reef, and you plan a Nusa Penida trip, because the boats leave from Sanur beach.

Trade-off evenings are quiet, and at low tide the sea is too shallow to swim in.

What to leave at home

lighter already

skip:One hotel for the whole trip

Split it. Three or four nights in Ubud, the rest by the sea, saves hours in traffic.

skip:A hire car to drive yourself

Book a driver for day trips instead. The roads are narrow and the traffic is hard work even for locals.

skip:Paying for a month you have not seen

Photos of long-stay rentals are often years old. See it first.
